Pantnagar is the first Agricultural University of India. It was established in 1960, at Tarai State Farm, Rudrapur in district Nainital of Uttar Pradesh, on land grant pattern, under the UP Agricultural University Act. 1958. Earlier it was named as Uttar Pradesh Agricultural University, Pantnagar which is now known as Govind Ballabh Pant, University Of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar, district, Udhamsingh Nagar of Uttrakhand. Teaching, Research and Extension are the main objects of this university but it is renowned for green revolution of the country. This is a purely residential university wherein about 5,000 students and more than 10,000 employees inclusive labourers have been residing in their respective hostels, official residences, labourer sheds or huts in its main campus only. In addition, university has different research centers with a huge agricultural farm, open from all the sides. The total area of this university stands about 10,000 acres in land. This university is situated in between the Lalkuan town - in the north-east , Kichha- in the south-east and Rudrapur-in the west at a distance of 7, 12 and 17 kms. Respectively. The university has two railway stations at its both the ends, called as Nagla in the east and Haldi in the north-west. There is also a civil aerodrome, opposite the university main gate and just across the road at zero distance. So there is connectivity with Nainital, Bareilly, Rudrapur, Delhi and Dehradun cities by road, rail and airways. The university has its different out stations all over the state of Uttrakhand as per attached lists. Vice-chancellor is the Chief Executive Officer of the university.
