The department was established in 1984 and offers courses in different fields like Irrigation engineering, drainage engineering, water and land management, rural engineering, crop environmental engineering, water resources and management engineering, ground water hydrology and modeling, flow through porous media, pumps and water lifting devices, agricultural environmental engineering and sprinkler and drip irrigation etc. The teaching is further supplemented by well equipped laboratories of the department like fluid transport machinery and hydraulic control lab., ground water pollution lab., water and pump development lab., field demonstration lab., and sprinkler and drip irrigation setups/components.
The department has adequate computer facilities for students, besides other sophisticated equipments, like horizontal Hele-Shaw model, vertical Hele-Shaw model, electrolyte tank model, heat conduction and simulation model, micro sprinklers, testing rig, pumps testing rigs, electrical analogy simulation facilities.
Besides teaching, the department also caters to research and extension in jurisdiction of the University. There are Three All India Coordinated Research Project financed by the ICAR and NCPA and four adhoc projects funded by various agencies.
