hi evry1..
too much of assumptions again....lets mk things clear frst....work ex does play a very imprtnt role, bt if u hv none since u r a fresher, then obviosly u wnt b disregrded....and weightage is givn to evrythng that improves ur profile....institutes genrally profile the students they call aftr the written exam....obviosly work ex wil count in such profiling,bt institutes also tk care of this and its official dat freshers exceed the work ex ppl, although by a litle margin....so dn't care fr this aspect as u cn hardly do nethng in it...then there is no diffrnce as far as i knw b/w a work ex of software or core field, the kind of wrk u hv done there and the amnt of time spent r the major things that they concentrte on.....bt leav this, try and crack it while being a fresher only....

Guys,
I wrote CAT paper some 10 years back but some useful tips which I did , you guys may be knowing but it i'll repeat for other's sake

1.  Stick to Basics and work on improving the base.
2 English: They are not seeking living dictionaries but one should have a good vocabulary required in day to day use. Best thing to do is read the newspaper daily, find 3-5 words which are new. write them in a register in alphabetical order- a page for each alphabet- with meaning and sentences. Read this register once in 15-30 days. Secondly, the comprehension part is important. So make sure yr grammar is good.
3. Data Interpretation: Work on ratios and percentages. Memorise the multiplication tables 1-20. these numbers should be on yr fingertips. Also memorise the division tables 1/1-1/20. these two will save a u hell lot of time while writing the actual CAT if u are a master in this.
4. Logical reasoning: understand the set theory well using diagrams. practice it as much as possible.

My recommendation to guys from 1-3rd year.

Work on the basics and get the fundamentals right. Read a lot of newspaper and Business World Magazine.
Don't start writing the mock CAT too soon. Ideally start only in the 4th year. Till then practice as much as you can.

For Guys who are going to write the CAT this year:

Practice the Various Formats of CAT papers. Compare your mock cat papers and see which sections are pulling u down. Work on them.

While writing the CAT:
1. The Format will change in each CAT paper so it will not be anything like you have practiced before. Be ready for that.
2. the Paper will be as difficult or easy for others as it will be you. So don't get distracted if the questions are very tough or very easy. they are the same for everybody.
3. Attempt the sections/questions in which you are the best irrespective of how many marks each question carries. Move on to the next question if you are getting stuck even slightly as you can always come back to it.
4. Carry pencils and write/mark on the question paper itself in abbreviated form especially for logical deductions, set theory questions, etc

Sleep well before the CAT, and go with a relaxed mind.

thanks

Check the last few CAT papers to check the trend.
Unlike GATE or other Exams, there no such course which needs to be finished. Its all about practice and speed and getting the basics strong.
Also, its important to peak at the right time.
Thus, it impossible to define the time needed for preparation. Depeding on the time which you have, you need to plan accordingly.

Dear Amulya,

To begin with, you can avoid slangs in written English, and try to write proper, formal English.
