ha i can say dat dey(our well wishers)may think 4 net facility in brand new hstls like SHIWLAIK,MANDAKINI,,,,,,,BT FOR oder hstls it is impossible...................here 4 to 5 years limit also extends its legs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Embarrassed

I dont think that net facility is necessary for students in the hostels. With soooooo much money pouring into the pockets of the students from various sources, they should purchase their own net connections and enjoy......

Well, Pantnagar have sure come a long way. When we joined in 1994, we didn't get to touch any computer in the first sem. In second sem we got to work on BASIC on a machine, where the keyboard was the computer. Hell, my 5 year old daughter's kiddie laptop is more advanced than that thing.

Then for second and third year we got to work on 8086, yes, you heard me right, 8086, in 1995 and 1996. We used to work on 5.25" floppies, which used to have 360KB capacity. Hard disks were unheard of, and RAM used to be 640 KB. We would boot the machine by putting one floppy and then program in C using another. For a decent sized program compiling was 20 minutes affair.

To top it all, laps was open only from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with one hour break in between for lunch. In reality, it never used to open before 10:30, and the lap assistant used to pester us from 4:40 to complete our work and leave. And nobody took panga with lab assistant because he was responsible for allocating us machines.

Then in final year (1998), we got compaq machines, 486, 80 MB hard disk and 4 MB RAM but still no LAN.

:-)
