The department was established in 1966.Over the years the department has developed excellent facilities to impart training in areas of electrical power system, electrical machines, instrumentation and control, electrical networks, microprocessor, computer applications and power electronics.

Apart from well equipped conventional laboratories like electrical machine laboratory, electrical measurement laboratory,the department has utilized funds obtained from Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India and All India Council of Technical Education to build up a microprocessor application laboratory, a personal computer laboratory and power electronics laboratory.Recently the department has received funds from the A.I.C.T.E. to modernize the Control and Instrumentation Laboratory and undertake a research project on vehicle automated control.

Each student in the department is given adequate time to work on computers. The undergraduate students are encouraged to take up project work in the area of microprocessor and computer application in the electrical power systems, and solid state electrical drives.

The staff members and research scholars are also conducting research work in the above areas. The department has also taken up consultancy work including training of engineers of local industries in the area of microprocessor applications.
